Tibouchina granulosa
(Desrousseaux, 1797)

 

Synonyms: Pleroma granulosum, Melastoma granulosum, purple glory tree, princess flower

 

 

 

Natural range of Tibouchina granulosa is restricted to the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); barely enters São Paulo. Cultivated widely in the tropical and subtropical areas elsewhere. It is a pioneer species growing in well drained acidic soils at edges of disturbed Atlantic Forest; often used in reforestation. Shrub or small tree, 4-12 m in height, and 30-40 cm in diameter; single or multiple trunks; longevity 60-70 years. Branches winged. The leaves are simple, elliptical to ovate, with 5 veins; pubescent; 8-19 cm long; perennial or semi-deciduous. Simple flowers with 5 purple or pink petals and long stamens. This species blooms twice a year, in February-April and from August-October. Fruit is a small capsule; the seeds are wind dispersed.
